Monsanto: Castelo
Monsanto: Castelo
In the 19th century, an explosion in the powder-room of the imposing Monsanto castle, built 700 years earlier, completely destroyed what remained of it.
At the summit of the steep hill, all that is left are the ruins of the fortress (the manor-house), of a watch-tower and of the impressive walls which follow the steep and irregular hillside and blend with the massive granite boulders that characterize all the village.
Within the walls, the
Church of Saint Mary of the Castle still rises; outside the walls, the old stones of the beautiful and ruined
St Michael´s Chapel remain.

Of the other temples situated outside the walls, among the small houses which once spread along the slopes, a solitary arch of the Chapel of St John has been preserved.
