A floating youth hostel? That's right! The Gil Eannes ship, anchored at the old sea dock in Viana do Castelo, has recently been turned into a magnificent youth hostel.

This ship was one of the city's landmarks for many years, when it was used as a hospital for cod-fishermen; it now has 57 beds and a common room.

It is worth knowing that the ship is also open to the public, so you can get to know some of the stories told by the men who lived on the sea off Greenland.

But that's not all! Viana do Castelo is not just about the river, or the sea: there are plenty of monuments, lots of shops, gardens and of course good local wine (vinho verde) and splendid food: try the Gil Eannes cod dish and the mouth-watering romaria (procession) sweets.

Another interesting thing about this town is the great festivity of Nossa Senhora da Agonia, which takes place in August and attracts thousands of people; they all want to be in the front row for the ethnographic procession that represents the culture and traditions of the northern Minho, which lasts for about three hours and is a dazzling show.
