Palácio Nacional de Sintra
Known by the local inhabitants as Palácio da Vila (Town Palace), Palácio Nacional de Sintra dominates the landscape with its famous chimneys.

It is the only Portuguese Medieval royal palace still standing, and it was certainly built over the residence of the former Arab governors.

Built along several centuries, it exhibits various styles, but two are specially known: the additions made by King João II (15th century) and by King Manuel I (16th century).

The interior decoration displays a wonderful collection of Mudejar painted tiles, and there are series of rooms and chambers, courtyards and patios, corridors and staircases.

At the kitchen, it is possible to admire more closely the huge conical chimneys, which remind us that it was here that the Portuguese Court retreated for Summer.
