Moorish Castle
The walls of Castelo dos Mouros, built in the 8th century, follow the contours of the mountain, in seemingly impossible contortions.

The Muslim fortress lost its strategical importance when it was conquered by king Afonso Henriques, together with Lisbon, in 1147, but from its towers and sentry paths there's an unique panorama to be enjoyed.

A beautiful 19th-century manor house surrounded by large gardens, looking down Várzea de Colares, a wooded, green valley towards the sea; the sound of running water gives an oasis of peace close to the centre of the town, declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
