Pillory

Largo de São Tiago - 5300 Bragança

Pillory
One of the most peculiar pillories of Portugal, the one at Bragança, erected within the castle, is a granite construction formed by a column ending in a decorated cross and standing on an imposing figure known as Porca da Vila («Town's Sow»), all this set on a base with four steps.

The pillory is probably from the 13th century and is more than six metres high; the pig statue, similar to others at Murça and Torre de Dona Chama, is certainly older.

Bragança, too often forgotten due to its distance from the decision-making centres, will be impossible to forget, once visited. From the top of a hill of the Nogueira mountain range, guests enjoy have a superb view over this district's capital city.
