Grutas da Moeda are located in São Mamede, just two kilometres away from Fátima, and were discovery in 1971, as two huntsmen that were chasing a fox saw it enter in a natural hole under the bushes.
For some months, the two men kept exploring and finding new galleries which revealed to be of an high scientific and touristical interest, and which are actually the visitable part of fhe caves.
Later, a group of geologists and speleologists confirmed the caves' scientific importance; since then, the main concern was and still is to carefully preserve the cavesand its surroundings.
All the galleries have named according to the limestone formations and the room's configuration, such as the Lake of Happiness, the Nativity Scene, the Shepherd's Room, the Waterfall, the Red Cuppola, the Flawed Chapel, the Red Dome and the Spring of Tears.
The caves' visitable extension spreads for 350 metres and is 45 metres below the entrance level.
The temperature is constant all year long, around 18 degrees.
