The islands of Ria Formosa are one of Faro's ex-libris.
The closest to the city, Faro island, is eight kilometres away in the direction of the airport.
Other islands, farther away and less accessible, are calmer and solitary, apealling to those who like to feel that the sea belongs to them.
In the Lighthouse Island (Ilha do Farol), there are some fishermen dwellings, and it is possible to rent one.
There are regular boat lines from Olhão (all year) and Faro (only in the summer).
The trip takes around 25 minutes.
