Horta Regional Museum
The Horta Museum was created on the 18th of July 1977 and it was decided it would be installed at the former Jesuit College building, dating from the 18th century and rebuilt after the 1926 earthquake.

It is a regional museum, covering the cultural patrimony of the area and formed by two nucleus: the main museum, located at the city, and the Capelinhos Museum Nucleus.

The museum displays diversified collections of different nature, depicting the history of the island of Faial.

Thanks to a large number of donations and acquisitions made over the years, its diversity offers visitors the opportunity of admiring valuable exhibits of rare quality and others portaying local traditions.

Thus, it includes artefacts of ethnographic character associated to traditional agricultural processes, namely the production of linen and wool, as well as technological objects associated to the Horta port and to the cable and telegraph posts operating at what was a crucial communications centre of northern Atlantic until the first half of the 20th century.

The museum also displays painting and sculpture from the 16th to 20th centuries and also an unique collection in the world of miniature sculptures carved from the white pith of fig trees by the Faial-born artist Euclides Silveira da Rosa.

The Capelinhos Museum Nucleus, dedicated to the volcanic eruption of 1957, displays a photography collection and documentation relating to the event and fragments of rocks and lava that help to explain the geological nature of the Azores.
