Église de Saint Pierre

Rubiães - 4940-691 Paredes de Coura

Église de Saint Pierre
Romanesque church from the 13th century at Rubiães, on the pilgrims' route to Santiago, it has a single nave and transept; the steeple was added later.

The first written reference to the church indicates it was constructed or reconstructed in 1257; the nave was widened in the 16th century, with the chancel facing eastward; the tower dates from the 17th century.

The decoration displays a portico with three built-in pillars and arches and a lintel with the sculpted image of Christ.

The sculpted corbel supporting the cornice, displaying a geometrical frieze, is of great artistic and symbolic value.

A Roman milestone rises at the churchyard, the Caracalla (nickname of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, 186-217, emperor from 211).
