Founded in 1965 and integrated in the
Maritime Museum, the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium, situated next to the
Jerónimos Monastery, exhibits a valuable collection of objects associated to the story of astronomy.
The explanatory projections show the cosmos and the place occupied by Man and include an
Information Session, a
Children’s Morning and special presentations on themes such as
Nautical Astronomy and the Portuguese Discoveries, dedicated to the voyages of Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias.
However, the main attractions of the Planetarium are the thematic sessions organized every month:
Earth – a Living Planet (January or June),
The Universe (February),
Stars Evolution (March),
Astronomy and the Planetarium (April),
The Sun (May),
Cosmic Oasis (June or January), The Moon (July),
The Solar System (August),
The Constellations (September),
