Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo

Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo
After king Afonso II reconquered Alcácer do Sal from the Moors on the 18th of October 1217, with the help of Crusaders and knights of the Order of St James, the religious order remained at the town.

Inside the Castle, on the top of a hill, the Church of St Mary was built on the site of a former pagan temple and a mosque.

It was founded by the Order of St James and is one of the most interesting examples of the late Romanesque style (end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century) still to be found on the south of Portugal, where there are few constructions of the kind.
