Castle

Castle
Built by the Moors, it is one of the few in Portugal using lath-and-plaster in its construction.

Ancient chronicles mention it had two gates, the New Gate on the northern side, and the Iron Gate, facing east.

The walls, built mostly in stone but with sections in lath-and-plaster, are delimited by great towers.

One is the Dagger Tower, displaying this weapon sculpted in stone.

There are another thirty, all in stone, except for two constructed with lath-and-plaster, tall and solidly built.

Curiously, the Castle of Alcácer do Sal still preserves an advance-tower similar to the one existing at the Spanish Castle of Badajoz.

Recent excavations have yielded important archaeological finds, namely from the Moorish period, which are displayed at the local Archaeological Museum.
