Arnóia Castle

Arnóia Castle
An unique monument of all the Basto Region, it is an ancient construction dating from before the foundation of Portugal.

It is thought to have been built by the Moors in the 8th century, at the site of a former Roman watchtower, and was rebuilt by the Christians in 1043.

The «Villa de Basto» overlooking the castle, was the former seat of the county until 1719.

The ancient gibbet can be seen on an opposite hill.
