Idanha-a-Velha: Cathedral
Idanha-a-Velha: Cathedral
The original building dates from early Christian times, but it was much altered during the Manueline period.
It still preserves, on the southern aisle, a Paleochristian baptistery from the 6th or 7th centuries.
Near the former great church of
Idanha-a-Velha, now surrounded by archaeological excavations, the ruins of the Bishops´ Palace can be seen, and a little further away, next to what remains of the South Gate, the ruins of a Roman residence (1st to 3rd centuries), which was cut in half by the fortified walls built during the 4th century.
