Castle

Castle
Dating from the 12th century, it was donated in 1466 by king Afonso V to Fernão Cabral (father of the navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral), who changed the military fortress into a fortified manor-house.

During the 17th century, it became seriously deteriorated for lack of preservation and was even used as a barn.

Now it lodges, besides a small museum, an open-air amphitheatre for cultural events.

Belmonte
Located on the hillside of Serra da Esperança, near Belmonte, where the sailor Pedro Álvares Cabral was born, it has its origins in the reconstruction of the ruined Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, where there is also a small chapel from the 13th century.
