Old Wall

Old Wall
Also known as Roman-Goth Wall, it was the first fortified enclosure of Évora, and its inner ring is still perfectly discernible.

It has several gates and towers which have been recently discovered as they were hidden by other buildings over the centuries, namely the Moorish Door, the St Isabel Door, the Saddlery Door, the Tower of Alcárcova de Baixo, the Saviour´s Tower and the Sisebuto Tower.

The building, a national monument, was originally a convent from the 15th century; its origins are connected to the legend of the apparition of the Virgin Mary over a thorn-bush (espinheiro) around 1400; in 1458, due to the popularity of the site among pilgrims, a church was built, and then a convent of hieronimyte monks.
