Sé Catedral
Founded in 1186 and consecrated in 1204, the Cathedral of Évora, devoted to the Virgin Mary, is the most important Medieval cathedral of Portugal and a remarkable example of the Romanesque-Gothic architecture.
The Romanesque draft melds with a Gothic structure and decoration, and this style is extremely visible in the vaults and pointed arches.
The portal is one of the most impressive examples of the Gothic style in Portugal.
It is flanked by statues of the apostles, by Master Pęro, who also made the sculptures of the cloister and of the founder´s chapel, lodging the tomb of the bishop who ordered these works.
It is also worth admiring the Chapel of Our Lady of Piety, or of the Spur, from the 16th century, with a marble portal in the late Manueline style and Mannerist retable.
The high choir, also from the 16th century, has Renaissance stalls and an organ from the same period and style.
The octagonal-shaped latern-tower, with Gothic windows and topped by a needle with stone scales, is also remarkable.
The Cathedral houses a Religious Art Museum with extremely valuable exhibits.
