Created by the Marquis of Pombal, they are considered the most beautiful botanical gardens of Portugal.
Besides the many rare species which deserve to be admired, there is also a vast collection of ornamental features such as statues and fountains.
The garden is surrounded by a fence with the main gate dating from the 18th century.
