University of Coimbra
Built on the site where the castle had stood and installed in the Royal Palace, the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest of Europe, is formed by a monumental collection of buildings which includes Manueline constructions from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The changes introduced during the New State (oppressive regime, 1933-74) were responsible for its actual appearance.
Besides the
Tower, the
Joanine Library and the
Chapel of St Michael, it is also worth admiring, among many other aspects:
Porta Férrea (iron door): leading to the university courtyard, it was installed in the 17th century to substitute the old fortress door.
Via Latina (Latin way): a colonnaded walkway from the 18th century, in the Mannerist style; above the double staircase there are statues by Laprade.
Sala do Exame Privado (private examination hall): where until the second half of the 19th century the graduation exams were held, exhibits paintings and decorated tiles.
