Maison de Sub-Ripas
Situated in the middle of the street bearing the same name, it is the most genuine example of the 15th-century civil architecture at the city of Coimbra, and it preserves many elements from the Manueline period.
It was built from houses and walls already existing and occupies various floors.
The irregular and trapezoidal construction faces both East and West and is divided into two blocks: the so-called Upper or Arch House, and the Lower or Tower House.
The main artistic features of the Lower House are the naturalistic Manueline ornaments.
The main façade is enhanced by a small portal, surrounded by profuse and elegant decorations in a truly original naturalistic style.
Other interesting features are the countless bas-reliefs on the outside walls which are attributed to the workshop of Jean de Rouen due to the technique and style they exhibit.
It lodges, since 1987, the Archaeology Institute of the Coimbra University.
