Climbing up the Rua do Quebra-Costas («Back-Breaker» Street), you pass the Town Door, near the Guard House, and arrive at a square with a magnificent view over the city, the Our Lady of the Conception Convent and the Our Lady of Visitation Chapel.

The visitor may then climb, with due caution, the stairs that lead to the clock Tower, from where the ruins of the Alcayde Palace and of the Salutation Convent can be seen.

Back to the square and passing under the arch, you arrive at the gardens where the St James Church, the Tower of the Evil Hour (or Keep) and the Door of the Sun stand.

Within the walls, lanes take you to the ruins of the cistern, the Manueline portal of the St Mary of the Bishop Church (the former Mother Church of the Castle) and to the Door of the Angel, of Santarém or of Lisbon.
