Pereiro

Pereiro
Travelling along the National Road 124 towards the Northeast inland zone of the Algarve, the first village to be found is the pictoresque Pereiro, at about 9 km from Alcoutim.

Lying in a typical mountain scenery, its white-washed houses and winding, steep and irregular streets are characteristics common to many other villages which surround the Barrocal.

Archaeological vestiges found in the region confirm its ancient origin, having been inhabited by the Romans who explored the mining ressources.

Besides enjoying a walk through the streets, the Mother Church, devoted to St.

Marcus, is worth visiting in spite of its simple and modest aspect.

It stands a little away from the village´s center, having been built in the 16th century.

Inside, there is one of the most interesting collections of retables from all the Algarve´s Northeast zone, as well as religious images worth admiring.

The Pereiro Museum Nucleus is an obligatory place to visit.
