Giões

Giões
Leaving Alcoutim and the river Guadiana behind, the traveller enters the Northeast zone of the Algarve, away from the coast.

Following the Estrada Nacional 124, on the right you can find the way to Giões, at about 7 km from the village of Pereiro and 16 km from Alcoutim.

Set in a landscape that marks the transition between the Algarve and the Alentejo, the low houses of Giões strecht evenly along a small hill, speckling with white the surrounding green sceneries.

Archaelogical vestiges have been found in nearby hills, dating from the Roman and Arab occupations, which proves that the region was inhabited since ancient times.

The village itself is said to date from the 16th century, when it knew great prosperity.

Today it is a peaceful village, where life goes on without hurry and which is pleasant to explore slowly.

Besides the charm of the village, it is worth visiting the pretty Mother Church, the São Domingos Chapel and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, at Clarines.
