Igrejas de Giões

Igrejas de Giões
Not by its beauty or architectural value, the Chapel of São Domingos is still worth mentioning for its history and symbolism.

A little away from the village´s center, its origins date from Medieval times, and it was the Mother Church until the 16th century, when it displayed a richer decoration and numerous paintings on the walls.

Since the 18th century the "ermida" is a pilgrimage site for people sick with fevers; they go there to ask the help of São Domingos, the patron saint of this kind of diseases.

Nearby, at the tiny site of Clarines, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Olive Tree tells us another story.

According to a tradition dating from the 18th century, Our Lady appeared on an olive tree of the environs.

It is said that those who visited the site and placed their heads inside a hole on the tree were cured of migraines.
