Mother Church

Mother Church
At the main square named Largo de São Salvador, close to the river, this church is an example of one of the first Renaissance constructions in the Algarve.

Built in the 16th century on the site of an ancient medieval church, it was later remodeled.

The portal is crowned by the coat of arms of the marquis of Vila Real de Santo António and of the earls of Alcoutim (names also linked to the city of Tavira history), and it is decorated by carved interwoven holm-oaks branches; The inscription "ALEO" was inspired by the defeat of the Moorish siege at Ceuta (1418/19).

The triple nave inside is separated by columns with chapiters, and the main chapel and side chapels have pretty retables in woodwork.

A collection of religious images complete the church´s decoration.
