Castle
Overlooking the river Guadiana, the castle of Alcoutim stands high upon a hill, thus requiring a rough climb.
Archaeological escavations made here confirm the presence of man in this region since prehistoric times.
As Alcoutim is a border town, the castle was built for defensive purposes in the 14th century, but was altered during the 17th century due to the introduction of artillery.
The walls are quite long, offering excellent views over the surrounding landscape.
On one side, the green hills, speckled by the white of the rock-rose plots, so typical of the Algarve mountains: on the other side, the river flowing with a cooling effect over the landscape that lies under the red-hot sun.
The Archaeological Nucleus of Alcoutim is situated here, one of the best places to obtain information about the museum and archaeological tour which deserves a visit throughout the county.
