Our Lady of the Conception Chapel

Our Lady of the Conception Chapel
Situated at the Praça da República square, near the castle, its original construction dates from the 17th century, having been built over the site of an ancient oratory from the 16th century.

The outside architecture is simple and humble, hiding the rich decoration that lies inside, although it has only one nave.

The walls are lined by tiles reproducing scenes from the Virgin Mary´s life, and the ceiling exhibits a panel created by the Algarve painter, Rasquinho.

The main altar displays gilded wood-work, in contrast with the blue and white ceramic tiles.

There is a beautiful image of Our Lady of the Conception, the patron saint of the chapel.

Visitors can still admire paintings of Jesus as a child, of St Anne, of St Joaquim and of St Joseph, which make the interior decoration even more harmonius.
