Mother Church

Mother Church
Igreja Matriz, dedicated to Santo Ildefonso, is one of the town´s biggest buildings, standing at an isolated height.

Its construction dates from the 16th century, having been later remodelled, namely the altars of the secondary chapels.

Of longitudinal shape, the exterior presents white-washed walls of masonry, where brown stone-worked pilasters decorate the main façade.

The portal and the bell-tower, crowned by a vault, exhibit typical Baroque and Mannerist characteristics, while the side façades are marked by solid buttresses.

The interior is divided into three naves, separated by thick Tuscan columns which are linked by pointed arches and crowned by semi-circular vaults.

The side altars, in gilded and polychromatic wood-work, also display Baroque characteristics, while the main altar´s retable, also in wood-work, reflects the Neo-classical style.

The baptismal chapel displays a panel painted by Severo Portela, an artist thus homaged by Almodôvar.
