Ermida de São Miguel
Ermida de São Miguel
At the parish of Casével, close to the Gregórios hills, the small Ermida de São Miguel was built where an ancient temple used to stand.
Once a place of pilgrimage, it includes lodgings for travellers and pilgrims.
Square-shaped, the outside of the chapel is marked by its simplicity and rural aspect.
Inside there is only one nave, and the main chapel is framed by a pointed arch.
It was probably queen Dona Maria I who ordered that the walls should be lined with coloured tiles, an exuberant decoration that contrasts with the humble white-washed façades.
Associated to the chapel´s construction, the Fonte Santa (Holy Fountain), or Fonte do Milagre (Miracle Fountain), about two miles away, deserves to be visited.
Dating from the 18th century, it is square-shaped and the walls with three pointed arches support the dome.
