Igreja da Misericórdia
Igreja da Misericórdia
Of small dimensions, it stands at the oldest part of the town, near the Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
Due to its modest white façade, the visitor would almost ignore the church if it wasn´t for the tall bell-tower and arch.
Igreja da Misericórdia was originally built in the 16th century, but the decoration was changed for several times over the ages.
Of rectangular shape, there is only one nave and a vault inside.
Both the main chapel and the central nave of the church fof popular taste (floral).
The lively decoration is perhaps the main characteristic of this small place of worship.
The image of Senhor dos Passos (representing Our Lord walking to the Calvary), still used at pilgramages to the Chapel of St Andrew (at about 5 km from Castro Verde), is also worth seeing.
