Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Church

Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Church
Also known as the Igreja das Chagas do Salvador (the "Saviour´s Wounds Church"), it is thought that this church was founded by the first Portuguese king, Afonso Henriques, but its actual architecture dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Of rectangular shape, it exhibits a façade with a triangular fronton and a bell-tower on one of its sides.

At the back façade, the entrance doors are delimited by arcades.

There is only one nave, ending in a semi-circular vault.

A triumphant arch emphazises the main chapel, where you can admire the marble retable and panels of decorated tiles depicting scenes from the Virgin Mary´s life.

Over the arch, several paintings portray the evangelists.

Gilded wood-work completes the decoration beautifully and enhances the altarpiece.

The church exhibits images reffering to the battle of Ourique, similar to those of the Royal Basilica.
