Royal Basilica
Built on the site of an ancient temple, the Mother Church of Castro Verde (or Basilica Real) was submitted to alterations during the 16th century, and its actual apperance dates from the reign of D.
João V.
Standing close to the Town Hall, it benefits from being situated on a height that dominates the town.
Thus, the acess to the large churchyard offers excellent view-points to contemplate Casto Verde.
On the façade, the two bell-towers, rising on each side, are the first to attract your attention.
Inside, there is only one nave and a ceiling lined with polychromatic wood.
The walls, entirely covered by blue and white ceramic tiles, exhibit vast panels reproducing the battle of Ourique.
It has four secondary altars and a main chapel with exquisite Baroque gilded wood, that glitters and overwhelms the other decorations.
