Saviour´s Church
Largo do Salvador
Saviour´s Church
At the main square named after it, Igreja do Salvador, although belonging to the historical nucleus of Serpa, stands outside the town´s
fortifications.
It was built in the 14th century, during the reign of D.
João I, and later remodelled, as the date engraved on the pulpits indicates.
Of great dimensions, the exterior architecture exhibits a tall bell-tower with four arches ending in a pyramid-shaped dome, where you can still perceive the colourful glazed tiles used to line it.
It has a single nave inside covered by a semi-circular vault.
At the main chapel, two angels guard the tabernacle, and the walls are decorated with blue and white tiles.
On each side of the nave, three chapels with gilded wood-work add light to the church.
