Igreja Matriz
Igreja Matriz
Built in the 16th century, the Mother Church of Alvito was influenced by the Gothic and Manueline styles.
In the shape of a Latin Cross, the exterior is crowned by turrets and battlements that give it a grim aspect.
The portal has a pointed arch of Gothic style, but the gargoyles are medieval.
Inside there are three naves; the central one stands on a higher level.
The Baroque carved wood-work of the main altar enhances the ornamented columns.
The walls have 17th-century decorated tiles.
