Igreja de São Francisco
Igreja de São Francisco
In the Praça Zacarias Guerreiro square, almost in front of
St Joseph´s Church, this construction of Medieval origin was once part of the St Francis Convent.
Igreja de São Francisco was submitted to several alterations over the ages, and a significant reconstruction in the 19th century, due to a violent fire, confered it styles of different periods.
Part of the Gothic structure can still be seen, and the bell-tower, profusely ornamented, reflects the Baroque style.
The carved wood main altar is also Baroque.
Inside there are various statues from the 18th century; the most impressive is that of Saint Anne giving a fruit to little Jesus sitted on the Virgin´s lap, probably dating from the 15th century.
The Sanctuary (now a side chapel) has twelve niches in carved wood of the Baroque style that belonged to the original church.
Decorated tiles from the 17th century complete its patrimony.
