Our Lady of the Waves Church

Our Lady of the Waves Church
Igreja das Ondas, or St Pedro Gonçalves Telmo Church, is primarily known as the church of fishermen and seafarers.

Also known as the Maritime Engagement Church (an old association of fishermen and sailors), is stands very near the river Gilão, in the Rua Dr.

Parreira street.

Its origin probably dates from the 16th century, during the reign of Manuel I.

With a trapezoid form and a wood ceiling, it contains paitings from the 17th century.

The main chapel´s altar piece dates from the 18th century and so do some of the statues; the figure of Our Lady of the Waves is particularly elegant and is probably from the 17th century.

The glazed tiles of the main altar and of the vestry are also from this period.

An image of Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, patron saint of the seamen, is also worth seeing.

The arms of king Manuel I, of the Marquis of Vila Real and of the Earl of Alcoutim are exhibited on one of the walls.
