Misericord Church
Misericord Church
Considered one of the most significant Renaissance constructions of the Algarve, the Igreja da Misericórdia was built in the 16th century, near the "Roman bridge", now the Rua da Galeria.
The door-way is decorated with an image of Our Lady of Mercy, supported by two angels; on both sides, the symbol of the Royal Crown and the city´s arms frame this set.
Inside, it has three naves held by chapiters decorated with grotesque faces.
The main altar is from the 18th century, in carved work, and exhibits images of Our Lady of the Visitation and of St Elisabeth.
In one of the side chapels you can see an interesting image of Our Lady of Conception.
As in many other churches of this age, panels of decorated tiles with images of saints or portraying biblical scenes complete the interior decoration, frequently showing off the statues.
