Mother Church of Alvor

Mother Church of Alvor
Consecrated to Our Lord the Saviour, Igreja Matriz do Alvor, dating from the 16th century and rebuilt in the 18th century, is known by the beauty of its main portal, intricately carved and, like the secondary portal, of Manueline style.

Inside there are three naves supported by pillars that belong to the initial construction, as well as the arch over the main altar and the holy water fonts.

The main altar is in carved wood and exhibits a natural-sized image of Christ from the 18th century.

The panel that represents the Saviour also deserves being mentioned.

Our Lord of the Navigators plays an essential rôle not only in the church itself but also in the stories fishermen like to tell.

The ornamental panels of glazed tiles from the 18th century, reproducing religious scenes and figures, are worth seeing.Outside, the churchyard is a space where the local population still gathers after Sunday´s mass to have a chat, with the Alvor estuary always in the background.
