Church of Our Lady of Conception

Church of Our Lady of Conception
In the square next to the Rua da Igreja, almost in front of the old market, the Mother Church of Portimão rises imposingly on a hill.

Originally built in the 15th century, it was reconstructed in the 18th century, as so many other monuments damaged by the 1755 earthquake.

Finally, it was rebuilt in the form it now exhibits in the 19th century.

Of the original building it still shows the beautiful Gothic portico with golden capitals and gargoyle.

Inside there are three naves and a valuable altar-piece in golden carved work.

Amidst the many religious images from the Barroque period that embellish the church, the one portraying the apostle St Peter, from the 16th century,is quite remarkable.

The four ivory and ebony crucifixs as well as the holy water fonts are from the Manueline period.

Coloured tiles harmoniously complete the interior decoration.
