Jesuit College
Jesuit College
Founded by the noble Diogo Gonçalves at the corner of the present Rua do Comércio, in the 17th and 18th centuries, Colégio dos Jesuítas is a formal building divided into three bodies.
The tallest houses the entrance to the church, of a single nave, one of the biggest in this style ever built in Algarve.
All the altars date from the 16th century, and feature elaborate and richly decorated golden woodcarving.
Note the image of the Virgin with the Child, a renaissance piece from the 16th century.
Other images deserving to be mentioned are those of Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of the Pity) and Senhor dos Aflitos.
The crucifix of Senhor Jesus dos Milagres (Lord Jesus of the Miracles), of the 17th century, is prominently displayed.
