Saint Lazarus Chapel
Saint Lazarus Chapel
Capela de São Lázaro, located in São Pedro de Sintra, was built in the 15th century on the place of a former "gafaria" (where pacients from leprosy were interned and healed).
The history of this chapel was marked by a painful moment, when queen Leonor, married to king João II, ordered the painting of the monarchs symbols (two birds) in the central nave, in memory of the death of their son, prince Afonso.
This chapel continues to hold religious services.
