Beco da Judiaria
Beco da Judiaria
Apart from its location in the heart of Sintra, Beco da Judiaria is in itself an historical place, a memory of the jewish quarters that once were frequent in Portugal.
It was in the Jewish Quarter (Judiaria) that lived the followers of Moses, who, despite not being formally a separate people, ruled themselves autonomously and kept their own administration.
Every community had a synagogue, that frequently also served as school.
While there are still some architectural vestiges from that community, all the houses are inhabited, and cannot be visited.
