National Museum of Ancient Art
The museum displays plastic arts (paintings, sculptures, drawings and engravings) and decorative arts (jewellery, ceramics, textiles and furniture.

The collection of paintings includes about 2200 works from the 14th century to the first quarter of the 19th century, divided into Portuguese and European paintings.

The collection of Portuguese paintings starts with works from the 15th century and the star exhibit is the famous polyptych of São Vicente de Fora (Adoration of St.

Vincent
), of mysterious origin.

The section dedicated to European paintings starts with five panels from the 14th century.

Saint Augustine, by Piero della Francesca, and the triptych The Temptations of St Anthon, by Hieronymus Bosch, are the two main exhibits.

A small nucleus of illuminated manuscripts includes the so-called Book of Hours of Dom Manuel I.

The collection of drawings displays more than 5800 works and also 16 thousand engravings.

The collection of sculptures includes about 2400 works from the 12th to the 19th centuries, mainly of religious character.

There are some exceptions, such as the magnificent Greek torso from the 5th century.
