Igreja de Santo António

Igreja de Santo António
Next to the Museum of Lagos, the Igreja de Santo António is one of the town´s most remarkable ex-libris.

The building was probably erected during the reign of João V, but was reconstructed after the 1755 earthquake by the commander of Lago´s Infantry Regiment.

It is perhaps due to this fact that the image of St.

Anthony on the altar wears a military sash.

The Baroque style is visible on the façade, the bell-towers and inside the church, which presents a vaulted ceiling.

It has only one nave and is sumptously decorated with blue and white glazed tiles and gilded wood of such splendour that it is named the "Golden Church" in English tourist guide-books.

It was declared a National Monument.
