St. Martin Church

St. Martin Church
The Igreja de São Martinho is situated in Sintra´s Old Town.

The monument was erected by king Afonso Henriques in the 12th century, so that it originally exhibited a Romanic architecture.

During the reign of Dom Dinis, it suffered some alterations due to the introduction of Gothic elements.

The 1755 earthquake caused some damage, and after the works of recovery it acquired an 18th century aspect.

A beautiful pillory stands at the entrance, and its porch is also used as a belvedere.

The Church mantains its functions to this day.
