Castelo de Paiva: Travel and tourism

Castelo de Paiva
Castelo de Paiva
The county of Castelo de Paiva boasts of dazzling views over the river Douro and lies in a green region full of vineyards.

But the town has another river as its ex-libris, the Paiva, which flows around the small island of Castelo (reminding us of an old fluvial fortress) and is excellent for water sports (there are boats to rent and an open-air swimming-pool), as well as offering a series of fine fluvial beaches. There is also the possibility of making river cruises along the Douro.

The county also exhibits a vast area of woods crossed by rivers and streams, where visitors can enjoy the beautiful views, a calm atmosphere and a close contact with Nature.

In terms of architecture, there are various manors from the 17th and 18th centuries in estates close to the river Douro (such as Solar da Fisga), as well as churches and chapels with fine gilded wood-work and religious images.

The regional handicrafts include linnen and basketry, but the works in copper and bronze are by far the most famous.

As for the gastronomy, there is a wide choice: from rice with lampern to roasted shad, roast cod and kid, veal cut in thick slices, fried liver and steaks with onion sauce. All this can be accompanied by the delicious local red vinho verde, a light and slightly sparkling wine.
