São Brás de Alportel: Travel and tourism

Mother Church
Mother Church
In a fertile inland region, São Brás de Alportel has been known as a centre for cork production in the Algarve.

The town has narrow streets and rustic houses, although there are richer ones with painted ceramic tiles and balustrades decorated with artistic wrought iron.

A few craftsmen still remain to produce the typical works of this region, such as cane and wicker baskets, patchwork blankets and wooden chairs and spoons.

The gastronomical specialities are cheese, sausages, honey, almond cakes and the well-known local spirit, aguardente de medronho.

Poço de Ferreiras, São Brás de Alportel
It was the first pousada built in the Algarve, in 1942, and the second in Portugal. Only half an hour from the coast and the Faro airport, it is the perfect place to savour the Algarve avoiding the more crowded coastal resorts.
