Torres Novas: Travel and tourism

General view
General view
Set in the magestic scenery of the Natural Park of the Aire and Candeeiros Mountains, the town of Torres Novas is full of charm, with lively streets and many fine churches overlooked by its 12th-century castle with eleven towers.

The 16th-century Miserichord Church is perhaps the most known, with a Renaissance portal, colourful glazed tiles in «carpet» style, a fine painted ceiling and a nativity scene dating from the 17th century.

In the centre of Torres Novas, the Carlos Reis Municipal Museum exibits paintings by 19th-century and early 20th-century artists, a 15th-century Gothic figure of Our Lady and valuable colections of religious art and archaeological findings, particularly of coins and bronze and ceramic objects found in the Roman ruins of Vila Cardílio, which is another attraction of the region. Situated at about three kilometres from Torres Novas, these ruins date from the 4th century and still preserve wonderful coloured mosaics and baths.

The enigmatic and labyrinthian Grutas das Lapas, large Neolithic caves carved in the rock, also attract the curiosity of visitors specially due to the «mistery» of their excavation.

Back in town, visitors can rest in the pleasant esplanades of the central Praça Cinco de Outubro square while preparing for some shopping: the ceramics of Árgea and the fine lace or the embroidered bedspreads of Torres Novas are deservedly famous.
