Chamusca: Travel and tourism

The river Tagus dominates the Ribatejo and its presence determines all the region's rural life, although it often causes great damages with the floods.

Such is the case of Chamusca, where the belvederes of Senhora do Pranto and of Senhor do Bonfim offer beautiful views, unequalled when the Tagus exceeds its limites and floods all the vast plain.

At Chamusca, it is worth visiting the Church of São Brás, with a Manueline portal and 17th-century decorated tiles. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Pranto is precious due to the gilded woodwork of two altars and specially the 17th and 18th-century tiles.

Always with the Tagus in sight, several villages are worth visiting. At Ulme, a former county chief town, there is the Casa da Forca (Gallows House) where the Town Council was installed and justice was made, and the chapel of Our Lady of the Conception has a pictoresque façade.

Arripiado is a beautiful village, built on a slope that descends to meet the river and with wonderful views over the Castle of Almourol and of the villages on the other side of the Tagus, such as Barquinha, Tancos and Constância.

At Carregueiro, known for its orange groves, there is a pleasant leisure space near Mãe d'Água.

The church of Santa Maria do Pinheiro Grande, the Belvedere of Cabeças and the 19th-century estate of Quinta dos Arneiros can be seen at Pinheiro Grande, while at Vale de Cavalos abundant Roman vestiges confirm its age and the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is worth mentioning.

During Carnival, masks with vegetable elements are traditional at Chamusca.
