Vieira do Minho: Travel and tourism

Forest Park House

With no appreciable monuments, the county boasts, however, of an unrivalled natural patrimony, with dramatic, windswept peaks, green wooded valleys and dazzling mountain lakes formed by several weirs.

The county seat, Vieira do Minho, is dominated by the impressive boulders of the Serra da Cabreira mountains and surrounded by dense forests of oak, pine and yew.

Crossed by the river Cávado, the dazzling beauty of blue, limpid waters outlining the lush green of the mountains is specially visible at Caniçada, where a dam created unforgettable sceneries.

Set in the nature reserve of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, visitors will find here the rustic and charming Pousada de São Bento and may enjoy practicing several water sports on the Cávado.

At the ancient village of Rossas, which preserves an interesting pillory, the river Ave runs down a slope covered with stones and rocks and clashes against them with great noise and foam, in contrast with the peaceful windmills and wooded fields on the banks.

Besides its natural beauties, the county offers visitors a rich and traditional gastronomy, with excellent veal, roast kid, fresh trout, home-made ham and sausages and the typical broa (maize bread with a thick, crunchy crust).

Local handicrafts include works in copper and in wicker, namely woven baskets.
